Membership & Governance
A framework for ethical small businesses
Robust enough to protect credibility, light enough to remain accessible to small businesses.
Membership is free of charge
The Business Kindness Alliance does not charge businesses to become members. We want the Alliance to remain accessible to small businesses, micro-enterprises and early-stage companies that are serious about principled growth.
The Alliance is financed by Sponsors whose support must be aligned with the BKA Charter. Sponsorship does not confer influence over membership decisions, ethical reviews or governance.
All applicants must pass an assessment and take part in an interview with the Director or Directors of the business. This protects the credibility of the Alliance and ensures that every member is genuinely committed to our principles.
Part I — Membership Criteria
Eligibility
Membership is open to any small or medium-sized enterprise that demonstrates alignment with BKA principles, in any sector — professional services, retail and hospitality, technology, manufacturing, creative industries, social enterprises, trades and local businesses.
Founded by consultancies but not limited to them: BKA is a cross-sector community committed to advancing a more human form of capitalism. Members must operate lawfully and maintain a reputation consistent with ethical practice.
Commitment to the Charter
All applicants must formally sign the BKA Charter and demonstrate alignment with:
- Purpose-led enterprise
- Human dignity in work
- Responsible and transparent use of technology
- Ethical decision-making
- The principle that the customer is not always right where harm would result
Ethical Standing
- No outstanding legal judgments for fraud, corruption, discrimination or gross misconduct.
- Compliance with labour, tax and regulatory obligations.
- Appropriate insurances and professional standards for their sector.

Part II — Governance Structure
Governance Philosophy
- Transparency over opacity
- Stewardship over control
- Moral courage over convenience
- Practicality over bureaucracy
The Council of Stewards
The Alliance is overseen by a Council of Stewards: 5–9 elected representatives from Full or Founding Members, serving staggered two-year terms, with cross-sector representation encouraged.
Responsibilities include safeguarding the Charter, reviewing membership applications, overseeing ethical reviews, guiding strategic direction and protecting public credibility.
Ethical Review & Conduct
An Ethical Review Panel — at least three Stewards and, where appropriate, an independent external advisor — may be convened in response to complaints or complex ethical questions. Possible outcomes range from advisory guidance to termination of membership, with all processes adhering to proportionality and fairness.
Annual Assembly
An Annual Assembly reviews progress against the Charter, debates emerging ethical challenges, elects Stewards and considers amendments. Foundational changes require a two-thirds majority of voting Members.
Funding & Independence
The Alliance is financed by aligned Sponsors so that membership can remain free of charge for eligible businesses. Sponsors must support the mission of the Alliance without influencing membership decisions, ethical reviews, Charter interpretation or governance. No Sponsor may hold a dominant position that could compromise the independence or credibility of the Alliance.
Sponsorship and Independence
The Business Kindness Alliance is funded by Sponsors so that membership remains free of charge for eligible businesses.
Sponsors may be corporations, institutions, foundations, family offices or private individuals who support the mission of the Alliance. Their contribution enables small and medium-sized companies to access BKA without financial barriers.
Sponsorship is a commitment to a more conscious form of capitalism: one where profit remains important, but not isolated from purpose, sustainability, human dignity and responsibility towards stakeholders.
To protect the credibility of the Alliance, Sponsors do not influence membership assessments, Director interviews, Charter interpretation or governance decisions. Their role is to support the mission, not to control it.
Sponsor the Business Kindness Alliance
The Business Kindness Alliance is financed by Sponsors so that membership can remain free of charge for small and medium-sized businesses.
By sponsoring BKA, you help companies take a meaningful step beyond an exclusive focus on profit and towards a broader idea of success: one that includes purpose, responsibility, sustainability and kindness towards stakeholders and society.
We call this Conscious Capitalism.
It is a different wave of enterprise. Not a zero-sum model where growth is pursued at the expense of people, communities or the planet, but a more human form of capitalism in which collaboration matters as much as competition, and commercial progress is measured alongside ethical contribution.
This is not driven by fear of a doomsday scenario. It is driven by a moral imperative: businesses have the power to shape the lives of employees, customers, suppliers, communities and future generations. That power should be exercised with care.
Sponsors make it possible for smaller businesses to access the Alliance, pass through assessment, learn from shared principles and grow within a credible community committed to better business.
Sponsors may be corporations, institutions, foundations, family offices or private individuals who believe that enterprise should remain ambitious, but become more humane.
